In keeping with its commitment to revolutionize health education across the country, BHEC launched the French version of the Black Health Primer on March 21 2025.
The Black Health Primer is a comprehensive, multi-module online course on Black health that addresses systemic gaps in medical education. The course promotes health equity by equipping health care professionals with antiracist education to appropriately contextualize and address Black patients’ health needs and outcomes. Anchored in critical race theory and led by Dr. OmiSoore Dryden, Prof. Sume Ndumbe-Eyoh and Dr. Onye Nnorom the course was developed under the guidance of an interdisciplinary Scientific Planning Committee and a team of close to 40 people that included health professionals, researchers, students, critical race theory scholars and experts in andragogy.
As of March 2025, over 80 organizations across all provinces have accessed the course and over 1 000 people have taken it. As per learners’ feedback the depth of the course content about the history of anti-Black racism and its links to healthcare is particularly impactful. Learners also highlighted the course’s content on the social determinants of health and systemic racism, and how it reshaped their understanding of health care.
“I appreciated how in-depth the historical context was. It was also easy to navigate through the modules.”
“I really appreciated the sections on anti-Black racism with the social determinants of health. It helped me re-focus [:] many of the ways I approach patient care may not be ideal when not considering these with Black patients. [...].”
“I thrive to be an epidemiologist with structural competence and knowledge to advocate and promote the health and wellness of Black [p]eople and all disproportionately impacted populations. This course allowed me to have the knowledge, tools and confidence to do this better. I want to go back to modules 5 and 6 and relisten, to work on the continuous critical reflection. Fighting anti-[B]lack racism which is fundamentally structural, as an individual can be intimidating, but this course gave me the space and opportunity to be able to be part of the structure and actively promote change towards better health.”
As illustrated by these quotes and as discussed during the French launch event premised on the theme ‘Black health: a legacy of antiracist leadership to help transform health care’, amplifying Black health is critical to facilitate an overdue anti-racist transformation and innovation of health care. The Black Health Primer is a critical tool to enable this process. Furthermore, the course is certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) and accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. The Black Health Primer has also been endorsed by the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC).
